Without a good night’s sleep, the wonder of nature may be lost behind sleepy eyes or a grumpy mood. However, as late as the 1980s, sleeping bags were still shaped like a sausage. The tight fit made it difficult to move and some people complained that they felt like mummies. A change was definitely needed.
Fjällräven has offered sleeping bags since the early days of the company. In the 1965 product catalogue, the Arctic Sleeping bag was a feature product. However, until the 1980s, sleeping bags more or less looked the same. People complained that they felt like stuffed sausages or mummies when sleeping in a sleeping bag. The material improved, but the shape itself remained the same throughout the years.
SMALLER AND NARROWER
No one seemed to care about these remarks. If anything, manufacturers continued to make their sleeping bags even smaller and narrower in order to maintain or increase performance. It was time for a radical change - so we decided to make our bags larger and more comfortable. Without increasing their weight!
FREEDOM TO MOVE
When you are out trekking all day it is important that you get a good night’s sleep. If you do not you will end up tired, cramped and irritated. A tight-fitting sleeping bag that restricts movement is a sure way not to wake refreshed and ready for the day to come.
Since most people move around in their sleep, we thought that it should be reasonable to expect a certain amount of freedom of movement. Even in a sleeping bag.
