Changing the sleeping bag

Changing the sleeping bag

Without a good night’s sleep, the wonder of  nature may be lost behind sleepy eyes or a grumpy mood. However, as late as the 1980s, sleeping bags were still shaped like a sausage. The tight fit made it difficult to move and some people complained that they felt like mummies. A change was definitely needed.

Fjällräven has offered sleeping bags since the early days of the company. In the 1965 product catalogue, the Arctic Sleeping bag was a feature product. However, until the 1980s, sleeping bags more or less looked the same. People complained that they felt like stuffed sausages or mummies when sleeping in a sleeping bag. The material improved, but the shape itself remained the same throughout the years.

SMALLER AND NARROWER
No one seemed to care about these remarks. If anything, manufacturers continued to make their sleeping bags even smaller and narrower in order to maintain or increase performance.  It was time for a radical change - so we decided to make our bags larger and more comfortable. Without increasing their weight!

FREEDOM TO MOVE
When you are out trekking all day it is important that you get a good night’s sleep. If you do not you will end up tired, cramped and irritated. A tight-fitting sleeping bag that restricts movement is a sure way not to wake refreshed and ready for the day to come.
Since most people move around in their sleep, we thought that it should be reasonable to expect a certain amount of freedom of movement. Even in a sleeping bag.

FOLLOWING THE SILHOUETTE
By redesigning the shapes of our sleeping bags to follow the body’s actual silhouette, we achieved an optimal configuration that provided more room. All of a sudden people could turn on their sides and even pull their legs up inside the bag. Outdoor people like us considered this to be nothing short of a revolution. After a lot of testing, the new sleeping bag was launched in 1989. The name – Silhuett.

LESS GRUPMY PEOPLE ON THE TRAILS?
After the launch, some of us believed that people hiking Kungsleden looked less tired and irritated. However, others argued that the people who thought they saw a change of mood were in reality the moody ones.

WE HAVE NOT FALLEN ASLEEP
Even though we started to sleep much better, our product development was not lulled to sleep. Over the years we have continued to develop the Silhuett sleeping bag. More functions and improved materials, just like you would expect. The name has changed to Thermo, but the silhouette shape is still there. Giving you a good night’s sleep.

Preparing you for another wonderful day.
