For warm jackets, which insulation is best?
Men’s winter coats range from warm jackets to winter parkas, but they all have one thing in common: insulation. There are two kinds of insulation for winter jackets for men: down and synthetic. Which do you choose?
Down is extremely warm while being exceptionally light, which means it can reach a very high warmth-to-weight ratio in dry conditions. It is also very compressible, which makes it easier to pack. On the other hand, it loses its warming capabilities when it is wet and takes a lot longer to dry.
Synthetic insulation is warm even when it is wet and also quick drying, which makes it a better option for snowy or rainy conditions. However, it is not as light as down, nor is it as compressible and packable.
