How to pack a backpack for trekking.
Even the highest performance walking rucksacks or camping backpack can be unwieldy and uncomfortable if packed poorly. Here are some tips:
First, the golden rule: keep the centre of gravity as high up and as close to your back as possible. This prevents having to bend forward to prevent slippage and tipping.
Then, correctly use the compartments. The main compartment of your trekking backpack is for large items that you do not need on an hourly basis. Like a water-tight bag containing a sleeping bag and extra clothes. Also, a tent, basecamp shoes, spare food and first aid kit. The front pocket of your hiking backpack should contain items used during longer breaks like a water filter, meals and a cooker. The top pocket is for critical items like maps, a compass and toilet paper. Hip belt pockets are for snacks.
Finally, divvy up the load if you are trekking with others. Packing strategically avoids doubling up on gear and allows you to swap trekking backpacks when a person a fatigued.
